TOP 10 MOST DISTURBING MOMENTS IN A MOVIE

I think I don’t stand alone when I say that lately (from 2004 to this date) hardcore gore has taken over horror films, it gets to a point where we get either a pop-horror PG13 movie, or a gut-wrenching, hardcore, movie. There are very little movies that slip through on the middle ground between brutal and boring (gore-wise). Given that fact that I’ve just re watched HATCHET (I & II) yet again, and the afore mentioned circumstances, I think a top 10 of the most disturbing moments, or scenes, in horror is in order.

As always, Bidites, I begin with a disclaimer, the list that follows this introduction is a countdown of the scenes that, in my very humble opinion, are the most disturbing scenes in horror, so as always feel free to tell me which scene you would have included, which you would have left out, and all that good stuff.

#10. HANNIBAL: The “brains for dinner” scene.

I know firsthand, because I’m a huge fan of the HANNIBAL franchise, that they aren’t horror movies per se, but they way our dear Dr. Lecter cuts off a little piece of brain from the still alive agent Krendler, cooks it, and feeds it to him, just made me shiver. Over all, a great movie that comes from a franchise that delivered many iconic scenes and quotes to modern film history, and that scene is a disturbing as it gets.

#9. THE BLACK SWAN: The “Knife in the hospital” scene.

Again, a movie that can’t exactly be clasfied as horror, but it earned a very special place in the heart of many horror fans, like me. The premise for the scene is as mple as can be, and aging prima ballerina gets fired, she throws herself in front of a car because of it, the now prima ballerina, who took her place, vits her at the hospital, she brings along a knife, and long story short, the knife ends up in the face of Winona Rider. The whole film is just haunting and beautifully well done, and ade from this, there are many scenes worth labeling as disturbing scenes, but only one could be chosen.

#8. I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE 1978: The “beer bottle rape” scene.

One of the very first things horror fans noticed when watching the remake of this controveral film, was that the rape scenes were very toned down, but the revenge scenes were heavily toned up, never the less, I thought the original film had to be mentioned if a countdown was to be made. This particular scene is the last in the series of rape scenes, but, if you ask me, it is by far the ngle most brutal one, this scene comes after Mathew attempts to rape Jennifer, but he is unable to “close the deal”, if you catch my drift, so the other man become inpatient and one of them beats, and rapes, yet again, Jennifer with a beer bottle. To all of those reading this and saying “There are way more brutal scenes on ISOYG”, my answer is yes, there are more brutal scenes (gore-wise), but this scene was just heart crippling, this is the fourth time this woman is raped or fifth, I don’t quite recall, and it is done in the most vile of ways, so on top of it being shocking to the eye, it is shocking to the mind, bedes, there are still seven potions to fill, be patient, this movie might come up.

#7. IRREVERBLE: The “fire extinguisher” scene.

There’s something about a guy getting his face smashed with a fire extinguisher that just screamed “put me in your countdown” to me. There’s really not much to say but “wow”, this is one shocking film, from rape to extreme violence, this film gives you not the chance to catch a breath from all of the shock, out of many scenes in the film, this one just stood out to me, bedes the rape scenes is brutal, but if you want to talk rape, we can still talk I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE.

#6. THE KILLER INDE ME: The “human punching-bag” scene.

A rather dull film delivered a very gruesome scene, in fact one of the most disturbing scenes I’ve seen in quite a while, where Casey Affleck punches Jesca Alba right in the face beyond recognition and leaves her to bleed out and die. As much as I didn’t enjoy the film that much, there’s no doubt it was disturbing, from pedophilia to S&M, from rape to murder, arson, and suicide, never the less, a dull film with a really disturbing plot.

#5. SAW III: The “improvised skull surgery” scene.

Coming down to the top five I had to lay down some hardcore gore, and if we are gonna talk hardcore, how about a skull surgery done with over the counter drugs and second-hand hospital equipment? Needless to say, this scene caused both, disgust and awe amongst fans. While SAW is particularly known for delivering, sometimes over the top, and cheesy, hardcore gore, this scene was nothing like the others, because it was the first there was no lesson, or game involved, it was just good old fashioned surgery, which made it terrifying to watch just for the fact that not so long ago most procedures involving the skull had to me done that way, by drilling and sawing. All I can say is we are lucky medicine has come a long way from then.

#4. I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE 2010: The “Johnny’s Death” scene.

I told you ISOYG would come up again! This scene was just far too gut-wrenching for any guy to watch, because it involves a chick getting rid of your privates with hedge clippers and putting them in your mouth, yeah, pretty gruesome. I struggled on whether to put this scene, or the acid bathtub one, but I ended up choong this one because it resembled the most shocking dead on the original film, and the fact that while watching it I felt as if an ex girlfriend was waiting for me with hedge clippers.

#3. HOSTEL II: The “counter offer” scene.

The scene comes out of the blue, and that’s why it is so shocking, for those of you who are familiar with HOSTEL, it is needless to explain why a victim escaping because of a costumer who had a change of heart is pretty unexpected, but it happened, and it didn’t turned out well for the costumer. When Beth manages to seduce Stuart in order for him not to kill her, she then forces him into a table just before the managers of the chambers arrive to the torture room, when they confront, she buys her way in the club, and asks Stuart to be her first victim, when the manager says “In order to join the club you have to kill”, she castrates Stuart and tells them to leave him to bleed out, not before she feeds his privates to the dogs, so yeah, all in good fun.

#2. THE EXORCIST: The “crucifix” scene.

One of the reasons why no other posseson film has been able to top or get in the same level as THE EXORCIST is the various iconic scenes that made people all over the world lose sleep, and scan their children for gns of posseson, one of the most iconic and gruesome scenes is the crucifix scene. In one of the most emblematic scenes of the film, Regan grabs a crucifix and begins to rape herself with it to the point of bleeding while curng and saying the most shocking things. Needless to say, Catholic people all over the world criticized the film with disgust, but no matter how hard they tried, THE EXORCIST lives on as one of the most emblematic movies ever.

#1. CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST: The “last raw footage” scene.

CH is without a doubt one of the ngle most controveral, shocking, and just plain disturbing films of all time, a film so wretched it was banned even on it’s own country, a lot of scenes in this movie were worthy of mention in this list, but the one that just had to be here was the last piece of raw found footage shown, there’s everything in this sequence, from rape, to cannibalism, it’s just unbelievable, the lead female gets raped and beheaded, one of the lead males gets hit with a spear, shot and cannibalized, and the main lead gets killed by a mob of angry tribe member, so as you can imagine this is no Disney flick. Truly shocking, truly gut wrenching, no other scene crosses my mind that is as brutal as this one.

Bidites, that concludes yet another list, I hope you enjoyed it, and I hope I didn’t spoiled any of your meals. Feel more than free to deliver your submisons on the comment section below.

Great list! I agree with quite a few of those, and there are a few I am ashamed to say I havent actually seen. I have to add bacally the entire ending of Antichrist. Yes, I suppose this one also isn't technically a horror flick, but the last 20 minutes or so of this movie warrants an incluon on any "all time most disturbing" list. I hate to reveal this if you havent seen it, because it will spoil the whole movie leading up to it, so here is my spoiler disclaimer...click to read onThe movie culminates in testicles bashed in with a heavy wooden block,

blood ejaculation, hand-drilling a hole into a leg through which a heavy weight is attached, and finally, a severed clitoris. Although this might sound like some ck horror porn, the cinematography was beautiful, the acting top-notch, and I found myself mesmerized. I wish I could go back and watch it again to pick up on more of the symbolism throughout, I just dont think I can stomach it http://youtu.be/eBdDcQONmkM
