PROMETHEUS Not A PREQUEL? Ridley Scott Speaks Out, Sort Of

Director Ridley Scott and stars Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace touched base with their fans Tuesday night at CineEurope to spark some enthuasm among European exhibitors for their highly anticipated 3D sci-fi film Prometheus.

Although the director and his crew didn't bring any footage from the new, top secret project. They did let a few minor details slip out.

Scott acknowledged that Prometheus, while not a direct prequel to Alien, occupies the same general universe, saying the picture was inspired by a dere to explore the mystery of the "space jockey" the giant foslized creature with the burst-open chest seen in the first Alien movie but never explained.

Scott also confirmed that the film's title, which is a mythical reference, is the name of the space ship which was sent from earth by a mighty corporation which fans of the Alien franchise should be very familiar with.

"The (space) journey, metaphorically, is about a challenge to the gods," Scott said. But Scott's ambitions with Prometheus go far beyond mply restarting a hit franchise. The British director said the film's storyline, and script by David Lindelof, was partially inspired by the writings of legendary Swiss sci-fi writer Eric van Daniken."

Cast members, Fassbender and Rapace were even more tight-lipped about revealing pivotal details regarding the Prometheus plot. However, Fassbender did hint that his character, "David", might be a veron of the infamous corporate-degned android that plays a crucial role in the previous Alien films.

Rapace, on the other hand, only had this to offer; shooting with Scott has meant "hard and sweaty" days and that the 73-year-old director "still has more energy than all of us combined."

Look for 20th Century Fox to bring Prometheus worldwide next summer.
