Rumor Mill: An Early Glance at 'Dark Star Hollow'

Great news, horror fans! The genre is about to get a dong of some fresh blood - from a self-published author of a print on demand novel. Matthew J. Fougerousse has been tapped to co-write a big screen adaptation of his novel, Dark Star Hollow. In a genre currently suffering from an unending string of unoriginal remakes, reboots and sequels, new ideas are few and far between; a lesser known novel by a lesser known author may be just what is needed to press forward into an era of new ideas and clever concepts.

The lack of press behind the novel itself makes the somewhat star-studded cast a bit of a surprise: Kane Hodder, Josh Hartnett, Elisha Cuthbert, Christopher Lambert and Billy Zane rounding out the list as the Devil himself. With an estimated $20,000,000 budget and John Carl Buechler at the helm - a special effects artist turned director with film credits ranging from the awesomely bad Troll, entries in the Friday the 13th, Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street canons and even work on a Ghoulies sequel - it is beginning to look, at least at this point in pre-production, that someone may have spotted a diamond in the rough with Fougerousse’s novel and that horror fans may be in for a treat.

The plot of the novel carries shades of Stephen King’s Needful Things, on a much grander scale. A man makes the decion to barter the souls of an entire town for the life of his ailing wife; when thirteen souls escape his attempt, he is given a second chance some forty years later to make good on his bargain and save himself from an eternity in Hell.

As great as this all sounds, there are some problems: namely, no one seems entirely sure whether this is a legit film venture or not. A press release naming Buechler as director is the most information that has been given to the public as yet; what has appeared on horror tes is nothing more than a blurb primarily composed of that same release. Chatter appearing on IMDB message boards, as well as in commentary on the few mentions of the film that have made their way onto the net, tend to press the idea that the whole thing is a sham. In the long run, only time will tell.

The film is currently listed as in pre-production; no release date has been set.

The novel of the same title is available via many online retailers who contract with print on demand publishers, including Amazon.
