HorrorBid's 31 Days of Horror: From Dusk Till Dawn
We here at HorrorBid will be recommending one specific treasure for everyday of the month. The ultimate goal is mple; encourage the masses to seek out stellar films that fit the seasonal mold. While I’m certain plenty of our faithful readers will find some of these films predictable, or at the least familiar, we still feel as though a friendly reminder can go a long way towards renewed enjoyment.
On deck for October 10th, is the perfect balls-to-the-wall action horror hybrid, From Dusk Till Dawn. This Robert Rodriguez driven muscle car tears through any attempt at competition produced in the 1990’s: when it comes to vampire flicks of the decade, this ballsy effort spoke the sound of Gen X rebellion and did so while outshining virtually every feature of milar nature.
The gist of the picture you ask? Two brothers, both rogue bank robbers are headed to Mexico. Things get a bit out of hand after they kidnap Jacob Fuller and his two children and venture across the border, where they find themselves trapped in the Titty Twister, a vampire haven where unsuspecting truckers are targeted. A battle for humanity ensues, and the sheer disparity in numbers all but ensures few mortals will escape with a pulse.
Robert Kurtzman and Quentin Tarantino have crafted a tale that feels timeless, thrilling and vicious, all the while somehow narrowly avoiding sadistic. If there ever was a film to ride the fine line of decency and incivility, it’s From Dusk Till Dawn. Rodriguez however, is one intelligent fellow who knows exactly when to reign in the tuation, and the little compason tucked away in the film’s creases, allowed only to be glimpsed on rare occaon are the exact moments that make the film special.
The gore is an absolute blast; there are some visual elements that aren’t aging as well as they could, but there are some practical effects that absolutely kick ass. Tarantino brings his trademark insanity to the dialog, and it’s a touch that is heavily appreciated.
