The streak is over - finally a horror movie has managed to take the number one spot at the box office!
Paranormal Activity 3 managed to outpace all other films this weekend with an eye-popping studio-estimated take of $54 million from 3,321 theaters domestically, an average of $16,266 per theater. It should also be noted that female film-goers accounting for 54% of the audience.
The third film in Paramount Pictures' horror franchise exceeded expectations by an ample margin — optimists had projected early on that the movie directed by Catfish helmers Henry Joots and Ariel Schulman would top out at about $45 million.
The numbers for the Paramount Pictures release represented a gnificant increase over the second film's opening weekend
which drew $40.7 million in its debut. The film is also currently on track to beat the cumulative total of the first "Paranormal" movie which grossed $107 million at the box office back in 2007.
"Horror fans came out in very large numbers this weekend, and that's a testament to the filmmakers and the enduring power of this franchise," said Paramount's vice chairman Rob Moore.
