15 Badass Kill Scenes

As true horror fans, we all have a special, dark love in our hearts for the horror movie kill scene, those moments in scary movies where characters are violently, ruthlessly and bloodily dispatched from this mortal coil. Some of us proudly display this love of the kill scene in public conversations, while others pretend they're only into horror for other reasons, such as what it has to say and how it helps people deal with their fears, but I bet we all have all our own, personal lists of favorite kills that keep us riveted every time.Just a little late for Halloween (sorry, I was up to some shenanigans), here are 15 crazy kill scenes that comprise some of my favorite moments in horror.

1. The opening sequence double-kill from "Suspiria"

: "Suspiria" is mply a clasc, and one of the most stylish horror films ever. This scene is stunningly brutal and over-the-top, my favorite part being the arm stretching from off camera to stab the victim, which seems to stretch just a little too far to be humanly posble.

2. Goodbye, Tatum Riley : The clasc garage door head-smushing scene. Rose McGowan portrays a time-honored horror victim with a twist. She's foolhardy enough to walk right up to the killer and to try to fit through a cat flap, but also capable of fighting back, and giving the killer a few lumps on her way out death's door.

3. Goodbye, Jamie Lloyd : Michael Myers is a truly indefatigable killer, as this scene demonstrates. When he finally catches up to his poor niece, Jamie, after waiting for years to eliminate yet another member of his bloodline, you just know she's gonna die messy.

4. Goodbye, Julie the babytter : Being a somewhat overly committed babytter is never a very safe thing in horror movies. It usually gets you killed protecting other people's brats. This scene from Wes Craven's "New Nightmare" is no exception, as Freddy busts out of the movies and into "reality". I hope poor Julie got hazard pay.

5. Goodbye, Erin Ulmer : My interest in the "Final Destination" films is lukewarm, at best, but this is one scene where the premise really works. Predicting what is about to happen is damn near imposble, and the little whimpers that escape the hapless victim of fate as their brains drip down their face are gut-wrenching and affecting.

6. Goodbye, Maureen Evans : A crazy crowded theater knifing! a victim being stabbed while watching "Casey Becker" stabbed on screen! This scene kicked the surrealism of the "Scream" formula up a few notches, and the accusatory look on Jada Pinkett's face as she surveys the audience that didn't help her makes this a potent kill scene.

7. Michael Myers bloodbath : Every once in a while, a horror movie finds a way to let their psycho killer just cut loose in an enclosed space with flickering lighting. This is a particularly effective use of that technique. It's hard to tell exactly how many people Michael actually offs in this well-crafted scene. And yes, that is Paul Rudd you see looking on.

8. Goodbye, nameless spouter of cliches: Is it just me, or are death scenes where all someone's guts fall out of them friggin' awesome ? You just know from the second this poor, tertiary redneck steps into the path of this ugly mofo from the horror/comedy "Slither" that things are going to end badly.

9. Goodbye, Sarah Darling : Say want you want about "Scream 3" (which I happen to find innovative and highly enjoyable), this scene is quite clever. It's also frustrating to watch as poor Sarah Darling tries in vain to fight Ghostface off with weapons that turn out to be flimsy movie props. It may not spill gallons of gore all over the place, but this kill scene has originality to spare.

10. Goodbye, Bill Murray : As this scene from "Zombieland" illustrates, zombie apocalypses bring with them other hazards bedes just zombies. Such as practical jokes.

11. Goodbye, Kimberley Caldwall : Did I mention that kill scenes where people's guts fall out are awesome? They're even better when the person is cut in half in the process. And while Kimberely Caldwell may not be a celebrity of a stature anywhere near that of Mr. Bill Murray, watching an "American Idol" contestant get splattered all over the road is somehow very satisfying.

12. The Lord didn't protect them : Horror movie victims are predominantly oversexed teens, but this scene from "Hatchet" features Victor Crowley brutally murdering a sweet, God-fearing, middle-aged married couple. He kills the heck out of 'em, too, chopping the man down like a tree and unceremoniously separating the woman from her head.

13. Goodbye, Kirby Reed : Okay, part of me hopes this one will turn out not to technically be a "kill scene" at all, because I want this character to end up alive in "Scream 5". However, for now, it stands as one of the most effective kill scenes in "Scream 4", as Kirby's killer murmurs "Shh. I know. It doesn't happen as fast as it does in the movies." while she wriggles on the end of his knife.

14. Goodbye, Tosh : "Urban Legend" was one of those slasher films that popped up after "Scream" hit the bigtime to try and ride its coattails. Shameless as such mimicry might be, this was one of the better "Scream" clones that the 90s were flooded with. This scene is delightfully wicked. As an added bonus, the victim here is none other than Scream Queen Danielle Harris.

15. Always check the candy : This scene from the always unpredictable "Trick r' Treat" gives us a vivid and gross rendition of the cautionary tale all our parents probably told us about poison and/or razor laced candy. And yes, that is the fat kid from "Bad Santa" vomiting blood all over. I guess he excels at playing hapless youngsters who are far too trusting.
