Horrid Horror - 5 Flicks That Disgrace The Horror Genre

We all know that the world of horror is filled with an infinite amount of bad, cheesy, cheap or over-the-top flicks. Whatever your term of choice may be, we still keep this love-hate relationship with these certain films that we just can't let go of and keep watching over and over again despite their wretchedness.

But there are some flicks out there that are just downright awful to the point I could never learn to love. As I'm certain many disagreements will ensue, I have devised a short list of five films that are a disgrace to the horror genre. Of course, there are plenty more that would fit precisely within this list, but these are just a few that are prominent enough to deserve no more than one star each.

5. Rest Stop (2006)

I usually don't mind extremely offbeat films (Basket Case being a prime example), but this senseless slasher attempt just didn't work for me. Being set in a rest stop bathroom in nearly its entirety, a young girl gradually going more and more insane as she fends herself against a crazed psychotic killer, following the abduction of her boyfriend, is nothing original and radiates no suspense or unnerving sequences. And did they really need to throw in the whole inbred family into the mix? The only thing I can say that I like about this is its cover art, which does a fine job of drawing in the viewer, but doesn't do it justice after seeing its forgettable contents.

4. Maniac Nurses Find Ecstasy (1990)

220px-Maniacnurses.jpg

Troma is infamous for serving up trashy films, and this early 90s flick about sadistic nurses who provide the very oppote of health care is no exception. Don't be fooled by its cover art or title as this Belgian film is absent of any half-decent effects, is poorly dubbed even for Troma standards and is horrendous acting where half-naked nurses with machine guns can't even spark your libido.

3. One Missed Call (2008)

Do we really need to have cell phones depicting fate? Not long ago when Japanese adaptations were bacally enthralling the horror scene in theaters, this lame "Americanized" veron of Chakushin Ari (2003) provides the uncharismatic characters with details pertaining to their eventual death via voicemail. Do I really need to justify further about why this film made this list...?

2. The Wicker Man (2006)

Could this posbly be deemed as Nicolas Cage's worst film? Portraying Edward Malus this time around, it's not that Cage doesn't radiate life into his character, but rather placed in a lead role with a choppy script and a ridiculous, over-the-top finale that's a slap in the face to the 1973 original.

1. Stay Alive (2006)

Again, we have technology playing a key role in a horror film. A group of teens try to solve the mystery behind a friend's death, but the answer lies within the story of an online video game. Just as their characters die in the game, those playing lose their lives the exact same way they witnessed on screen. Nothing original here, and again just like an earlier entry within this list, there's just something about technological devices that does not give off any thrills. Also, that stated with Frankie Muniz starring in a horror movie sums up to one thing: Game Over.

Blasphemy! Stay Alive (the full, unrated cut) is a great horror film!

Rest Stop would have been better if they didn't get into all the half baked psychological stuff. (or if they would have followed through with it)

The funny thing about the original One Missed Call is Takashi Miike made it as an intentionally derivative J-horror film. He took elements from movies like The Ring, The Grudge, and put his own spin on them, often to make fun of them. Of course, the US market just saw it as another Aan horror film to remake, so they made the remake as generic as posble, misng out on all the subtleties that made the original different.

The Nick Cage Wicker Man is one of the best unintentional comedies ever.

I think the biggest disgraces to the horror genre is mostly coming out of Platinum Dunes. They are making the laziest remakes of clasc genre icons. They have the money that they really could do something special beyond the budgets of what the originals could do. Yet, all they can manage is CGI heavy mediocre retellings of stories we already know. If they took some chances and maybe went in different directions with the movies I would have some respect for them. Instead, they just phone it in over and over.

@Cecil That's the power of opinion my friend, and of course respect yours as well. Notice that the majority of these films average being released in the mid 2000's, and as there are an infinite amount of other titles that may even be worse, I mainly pointed out the more contemporary titles that stuck out to me.

I agree that certain production companies are quite lazy and don't put in the hard work of producing a solid horror film sans CGI. They're bacally more concerned with quantity over quality.

Good little piece here Mike!

I've never seen Maniac Nurses but wow am I shocked that it's not #1 (and I'm just judging it's cover!).

A few that come to mind for me are:

RZ's H2 (I don't give a fuck what your 'vion' is Rob, this film not only insults the Halloween franchise but the horror genre itself) Halloween Resurrection (No explaination needed I think) Uwe Boll's Alone in the Dark Grave Encounters Don't Go Into The Woods
joshk1986 Tuesday 11/08/2011 at 11:31 AM | 86675
@joshk1986 Thanks man! And in terms of quality, I would definitely say that Maniac Nurses is undoubtedly the worst on this list. But compared to the next three, they all had the potential of being decent films coming from a major production company with larger budgets...but of course failed.

And speaking of Uwe Boll, as I was writing this list I totally forgot about "House of the Dead," which most likely would've taken the first or second ranking here. Just goes to show that some films are so bad that they become completely blacked out from your mind.

I completely agree with this. The PG13 veron of Stay Alive sucks. I see it on tv and it's just bad BUT the unrated veron is SO much better.

And I actually like the One Missed Call remake, it's one of the those guilty pleasure movies (as I have stated in my article)

http://www.horrorbid.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=279&t=18355

If you want disgrace movies, try the Black Christmas remake or even better the Twilight series. They ruined the sanctity of vampires in the horror world and made them into emo makeshift droids. (oy, I can't wait for the last movie to come out so Twilight can FINALLY DIE!!!)

Oh, I wasn't saying you were wrong you are very well entitled to your own opinion. For me personally though, in this sea of bad knocks offs, PG-13 garbage, and vampires that shimmer I can't see how a bloody, original horror film like Stay Alive would make it on such a list.

I think if the studio would have had some backbone and released Stay Alive as it was originally intended, it would have been received better and wouldn't be looked on so poorly. So many people have only seen the pg-13 cut, which is a completely different movie from the unrated. They cut out over 15 minutes a two essential characters in the PG-13 cut.

I'm a huge fan of the original Black Christmas and I hated the remake...but then...it grew on me. You have to look beyond the surface of that one. There is a well crafted, love letter to the horror community in the remake. Believe me, I know all the crap it gets. I don't think it deserves it at all but in another way, I understand.

I think I would have liked it better if they put the one scene that made me want to see it for. It's in the trailer when Lacey Chabert gets pulled in by the Christmas lights. That scene ALONE made me want to see the movie and it wasn't in there and the way she died was HORRIBLE. But I will say this. I did watch it again on

youtube in chunks and it's still bad but now I can laugh at how bad it is.

And they did so they could make more money because teens will go to a horror movie more than adults. And it would appeal to more kids because it's about video games.

I do like the Black xmas remake so twisted and awesome. here are worse films.

Twilight The Texas chainsaw massacre : next generation cannibal holocaust exorcist 2
hm4life Wednesday 11/09/2011 at 03:04 AM | 86715
Here's my little list of 5. And I agree with a lot of the movies listed here already.

The Video Dead: On the same level as Troll 2, minus the laughs.

The Stuff: Still a guilty pleasure of mine, as it's so completely stupid hilarious... but just a terrible, terrible horror movie

A Serbian Film:

Not even horror... just an hour and a half of wannabe porn/snuff with absolutely nothing redeeming whatsoever. A total piece of shit IMO.

Violent Shit 1-4: Total handi-cam terribleness, with ridiculously poorly made gore. Not even in a laughable way either. Just awful lol. How people can market garbage that my nephew could produce is beyond me.

The Wicker Man remake: Nicholas Cage... >_<

And most new PG-13 horror in general. Gothika, Dark Water, The Happening, (I'm going to get flack for this but...screw it) I Am Legend, When a Stranger Calls... Etc. Any attempt to mass produce bad horror to a wide audience is just horseshit, IMO. I'm not saying that horror has to be a borderline snuff film, but... "Kiddie horror" = sucks.

That used to be the case but not so much anymore. Look at the Saw franchise, Hostel, and the Scream series. They are all rated R and all made serious bank. The PG-13 game has been doing nothing but pisng off moviegoers and more often than not, the movie ends up failing because of it.

Also, video games aren't just for kids anymore. Most of the heavy hitters are rated M.

True but I will say this. I think the only PG13 horror film I will defend is The Grudge. To me, it's one of the better remakes and it actually kind of scared me.

Oh and I would like to add Darkness to this list. (The Anna Paquin film). It could have been SO good. It was just SO..........DAMN.............SLOW!!!! I did like the ending but it was like 4 minutes of a 100 minute film. Zzzz (another film I wish I could get my $2 dollars back).

Nice dude! I'm surprised there aren't more M. Night films on this list.

I would like to add The Happening to this list if it's not already part of it. That movie was ridiculous, where did the killer wind or whatever go at the end? Just dispates randomly?

Nice additions to the list and conversation from everyone. A few 'dishonorable' mentions of my own:

House of the Dead (as I have agreed with another post earlier in the forum) Tromeo & Juliet (you can tell that I'm not a big fan of Troma) The Skeleton Key Mirror, Mirror III: The Voyeur The Fourth Kind (the most ridiculous found-footage psychological thriller)

And did I actually read someone mentioning Twilight? That should never even be mentioned under any circumstance throughout this webte! Haha

Call me crazy but I actually kinda liked The Fourth Kind. Then again I've always been into Aliens so maybe that's why, plus the woman playing the "real" doctor did a really good job. Milla was pretty good but not as good.

@Sephit Although the acting was decent, I guess I just couldn't get past the fact about the whole "based on true events" notion.

Yeah the fact that they tried to pass it off as true was a little unsettling. Once I got over that aspect it was pretty good, I wouldn't buy it or watch it religiously or anything but it wasn't a disgrace imo.

I thought the Grudge was pretty good. I was a bigger fan of the original but they didn't do a bad job of it. PG-13 horror can be done well, I just have a problem with when the director makes an R rated film and the studio cuts it to PG-13.

I've never seen Darkness but I heard it was pretty dull. Not a big Paquin fan so I was never in a hurry to see it.

Haven't seen the other two but H2 wasn't that great of a film, granted it was better than resurrection and maybe 5 and posbly 6.

Maybe it isn't exactly a disgrace though.

For me it's Hatchet.

I been reading articles here for some time now, I always find my new movies here and go by other's reviews. Most I agree with and have found out some great flicks from reading here. But on this movie, man I just couldn't see eye to eye with anyone who liked this. I thought the first one was just lly with horrible acting, and the second one was slightly less lly with a touch more believable acting.

Everyone talked so highly of those movies, although I definitley will watch a third installment when one comes out, it was just extremely boring, cliche'd, and just been there seen that sort of thing.

It was like taking Jason Vorhees and putting him in the swamp letting his father raise him, burn him instead of drowning him, removing the hockey mask, and letting him shout DADDDDYYYY through the whole friggin movie.

I'm sorry Hatchet Army I'm not a Crowley fan at all, the only mongoloid freak Kane Hodder should stick to playing is Jason.

I wish we could just bury the Hatchet franchise already, a pun intended.

I honestly don't think the movie was supposed to be taken seriously. It's supposed to cheesy and campy. To me, that was the whole point. I found it to be like Shaun of the Dead. It was mainly funny but had some scary elements. But to each their own.

I'm thinking the driving force behind the film may have slipped right beyond Bradley, which is okay I suppose... although I'm not sure how you don't realize that it's intentionally campy, over the top and goofy in general. Maybe that's just not his thing. For me, Hatchet is fucking golden. Absolutely golden!

Selma Blair is probably the only aspect I enjoyed with this film, also this may sound weird but the cover being blue instead of green also gave me a bad feeling before I even watched it. The reason i own it is because my parents were at the store, I was at work and my mom thought it was the original so you can imagine my disappointment when I watched it haha.

Halloween Resurrection......do I need to explain?

Hatchet.....false adverting, the only thing "old school" about this piece of shit was how much it sucked like some of the very bad 80's films. Bad acting, bad writing, just plain crap.

Paranormal Activity......all hype and corporate adverting.

The Fog remake....why bother, posbly the worst remake

House of the Dead.....plain bad

I agree on the Fog remake, it was only like 3 dollars at the most at a video store that was going out of buness but damn it gave me a headache watching it and I'm not exaggerating, it seriously gave me a headache and a bad feeling in my stomach.

I actually kind of like The Fog remake, ON THE SOLE FACT that it gave the movie a back story...and Selma Blair is in it, but I will admit it is a BAD movie.
