"OLDBOY" Remake to Have Brutal, Horrifying Ending
It had been reported recently that Spike Lee will be directing a remake of "Oldboy" that has Josh Brolin on board to play the lead character and Colin Firth is attached to play the villain. Now, according to producer Roy Lee, we have more information hinting at some of the changes fans can expect.
"We are planning to shoot 'Old Boy' in March and
should start pre-production in late January," he said. "This is a brand new script by Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend). It is very milar to the
film, but Protosevich has added new elements that will throw off the audience who have seen the original movie, because there are new characters and new tuations that present themselves in a way that change the story but eventually go in the same direction. The ending will be something audiences - especially fans of the original movie- will be very happy with. Some may conder it a bit darker."
Lee added: "There's going to be a different interpretation of the hallway scene that is hopefully going to be Spike's gnature moment in the movie that he wants to show in a way that has never been seen in an action movie."
Oldboy (Hangul: 올드보이; RR: Oldeuboi; MR: Oldŭboi, the phonetic transliteration of "old boy") is a 2003 South Korean film directed by Park Chan-wook. It is based on the Japanese manga of the same name written by Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya. Oldboy is the second installment of The Vengeance Trilogy, preceded by Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and followed by Sympathy for Lady Vengeance.
The film follows the story of one Oh Dae-su, who is locked in a hotel room for 15 years without knowing his captor's motives. When he is finally released, Dae-su finds himself still trapped in a web of conspiracy and violence. His own quest for vengeance becomes tied in with romance when he falls for an attractive sushi chef.
The film won the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival and high praise from the Predent of the Jury, director Quentin Tarantino. Critically, the film has been well received in the United States, with an 80% "Certified Fresh" rating at Rotten Tomatoes.
Film critic Roger Ebert has claimed Oldboy to be a "...powerful film not because of what it depicts, but because of the depths of the human heart which it strips bare". In 2008, voters on CNN named it one of the ten best Aan films ever made.

Let's hope this one goes well...or at least ok. Not too sure about Colin Firth in the role though.
