Sounds like we may have a problem when 2040 rolls around. The problem is a 460 foot asteroid degnated 2011 AG5. Discusons are underway among members of the United Nations Action Team on near-Earth object on how to deal with this. Though it's smaller than the 9 mile wide asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs, it can potentially kill millions if it hits a city. Scientists, thus far, have only been able to observe half of its orbit and will be able to gain more knowledge on it & what to do, if anything, between 2013 & 2016. Options ranging from attaching probe(s) to it to steer it away from Earth to nuclear weapons are on the table.
