October 2nd marks the birthday of the undead action comedy ZOMBIELAND. Released back in 2009, the unlikely Woody Harrelson/Jesse Eisenberg film eventually earned $102 million at the box office, which in turn sparked plenty of talk about bringing Harrelson, Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin back for a sequel. However by 2011, Eisenberg sounded hesitant about his involvement, questioning the sequel’s relevance while Harrelson made it known that he didn’t “feel like a sequels guy.” Last year saw the attempt at ZOMBIELAND: The TV Series which was expected to happen through Amazon Instant Video but the company passed on the pilot.
Now all of the sudden Sony Pictures seems determined to raise ZOMBIELAND 2 from the grave. We have learned that Sony Pictures has hired Dave Callaham to write the sequel, and ZOMBIELAND’s director, Ruben Fleischer will be returning and also to supervise the script. Writers of the first film Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who recently wrote the upcoming DEADPOOL movie are not attached.
No official word on if any of the core cast are on board. We will continue to follow this story.
