Official Title For INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 Revealed Plus Moon-Tug Vehicle Unveiled - More Within!

Around the end of last year Twentieth Century Fox officially green lit the long awaited INDEPENDENCE DAY 2, and set the film on track for a 2016 Summer release. That means The alien invasion sequel will be hitting the big screen almost exactly 20 years after the original.

The official title for the sequel has been revealed by way of the video below.



There you have it, the official title will be INDEPENDENCE DAY RESURGENCE. Director Roland Emmerich spoke with THR and says of the upcoming sequel:

“We call it in the film the War of '96. It’s like a post-World generation that’s unified, and that’s amazing to see a world come together with a common enemy. That’s a resurgence.”

Jeff Goldblum also had some words about his character in INDEPENDENCE DAY RESURGENCE saying:

“It’s my job to lead the way in making sure everyone is safe on this precious planet. Having faced that last challenge, we’re all working in a beautiful way under one [goal]. Borders are no longer relevant in the same way, and that’s a very beautiful idea. We’re working together,”

Liam Hemsworth shared a bit about his character Jake, who will be driving a new vehicle called a "moon-tug" (see below).

"It’s kind of unlucky how he ends up in that ship,” he said. “Jake lost his parents in the first attack, he grew up in an orphanage, and eventually joined the military and became a fighter pilot, and eventually became one of the best of the best fighter pilots. I think his ego kind of got in the way, he made a bad decision and put someone’s life at risk, and he got the great job of driving this moon tug, which is basically a forklift on the moon.”



Synopsis:

"Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction."

It is no secret that Will Smith will not be returning to star in the sequel but that isn't stopping this machine. When producer Dean Devlin and director Roland Emmerich first began the serious talks of doing a sequel to INDEPENDENCE DAY, the plan was to make two sequels which would shoot simultaneously.

We learned not long ago that actor William Fichtner had joined the cast for INDEPENDENCE DAY 2. He will be portraying a lead role as a top general. Not only that, but Fichtner has signed on to do three films, that is if Twentieth Century Fox were to make two more sequels. Now with three new ID4 flicks possibly on the horizon, we can only wait and see what time will bring.

The cast is made up of Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A. Fox, Judd Hirsch, Bill Pullman, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Liam Hemsworth, William Fichtner, Joey King, Maika Monroe, DeObia Oparei, Jessie Usher, and Sela Ward.

INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 will be in theaters June 24, 2016.
