2013's MAMA was no doubt a hit at the box office. The film, directed by Andrés Muschietti and executive produced by Guillermo del Toro, pulled in $71 million from a budget of $15 million. So it comes as no surprise that the idea of a sequel is inevitable.
Plans for the sequel are already beginning to take shape as we have learned that STARRY EYES writers/directors Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch are in final negotiations to rewrite and direct the film for Universal.
Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier, and Isabelle Nélisse all starred in the film and we have learned that Chastain is not expected to return for the follow-up.
At this point it is unknown if the remaining original cast will be returning for the sequel.
MAMA focused on two sisters who are haunted by an eerie presence following their rescue from a five year stay in the woods.
Lava Bear will be producing along with Scott Bernstein and Russell Ackerman.
We will continue to bring you more on the MAMA sequel as it unfolds.
