1990 saw the release of the sci-fi thriller FLATLINERS. The film starred Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin, Oliver Platt, and was directed by Joel Schumacher. The story revolved around a group of medical students who journeyed into the afterworld to find meaning in their own lives before being resuscitated in the nick of time. Of course, things end up going horribly wrong.
With the new FLATLINERS movie just recently going into production, things are really looking good for the project.
Original cast member Kiefer Sutherland joined the cast not long ago and his arrival has posed the question, could this be a sequel in disguise instead of a remake?
Sutherland recently spoke to Metro and answers that question:
"I play a professor at the medical university. It is never stated but it will probably be very clearly understood that I'm the same character I was in the original Flatliners but that I have changed my name and I’ve done some things to move on from the experiments that we were doing in the original film. I loved making the first film and when I was asked if I would be interested in taking part in this, it didn’t take more than a minute to say yes."
So there you have it, the new FLATLINERS film is actually going to be a sequel. It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out.
Sutherland joins a cast that is made up of Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Kiersey Clemons, Nina Dobrev, James Norton, Charlotte McKinney, and Beau Mirchoff.
"University Hospital School of Medicine, a group of ambitious medical students are about to die... and live to describe the experience.
Embarking on a daring and arrogant experiment, the five aim to push through the confines of life and touch the face of death.
In their search for knowledge, however, the five discover the chilling consequences of daring to tamper with immortality."
The new FLATLINERS film will be directed by Niels Arden Oplev, who is best known for helming the original THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO and the pilot episode of MR. ROBOT. Ben Ripley will pen the screenplay with Laurence Mark and Michael Douglas producing.
Be sure to mark your calendar down for August 18th, 2017 as this is the current release date for FLATLINERS.
