Going back to December of 2014, the reports of a BEETLEJUICE 2 have been going strong. Tim Burton and Michael Keaton were speaking highly of the idea of doing another movie together. Burton even went on to say that a sequel is "closer than ever" at one point. Winona Ryder, who portrayed Lydia Deetz from the BEETLEJUICE has also shown interest in a sequel.
Fast forward to the present and Michael Keaton lets the air out of the tires as he tells Variety:
“It’s possible that ship has sailed. The only way to do it is to do it right. So much of it was improvised and so much was beautifully handmade by the artist that is Tim Burton. If you can’t get close to that, you leave it alone.”
With that being said and Keaton having his plate full at the moment with THE FOUNDER and SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, it looks as if the chance of BEETLEJUICE 2 happening any time soon is very unlikely. Who knows if the film will ever be made?
Burton had this to say a couple of months ago in regards to a possible long awaited sequel:
“It’s something that I really would like to do in the right circumstances, but it’s one of those films where it has to be right. It’s not a kind of a movie that cries out [for a sequel], it’s not the Beetlejuice trilogy. So it’s something that if the elements are right — because I do love the character and Michael’s amazing as that character, so we’ll see. But there’s nothing concrete yet.”
