DEATH NOTE is a Japanese manga series written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. The story follows Light Yagami, a high school student that comes across a mysterious notebook that grants its user the ability to kill anyone whose name and face they know. The popular series was previously adapted into a film in it's home country of Japan, and it even gave birth to a sequel. We learned quite some time ago that a new movie adaptation of DEATH NOTE was in the works.
Director Adam Wingard's upcoming live action adaptation of DEATH NOTE has just acquired the services of actor Willem Dafoe.
Instead of his face appearing on camera, Dafoe will instead be providing the voice of Ryuk the Shinigami in the film.
Also starring will be Nat Woolf, Margaret Qualley, Keith Stanfield, Paul Nakauchi and Shea Whigham.
Producing the project will be Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jason Hoffs and Masi Oka. Jeremy Slater has written a draft script which Wingard will be using.
"A student discovers a supernatural notebook that allows him to kill anyone by writing the victim's name, who then decides to cleanse the world of whom he deems evil. As the student is tracked by a reclusive police officer, a cat-and-mouse game ensues."
DEATH NOTE will be coming to Netflix in 2017.
