With last year being the election year, a third entry into THE PURGE franchise couldn't have arrived at a better time. Especially when the name of the film is THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR.
Each PURGE film has earned more money than the previous, so it makes total sense that writer/director James DeMonaco's franchise will be continuing in some form or fashion.
We have learned that Blumhouse has now launched their own independent TV studio along with ITV Studios with the plan being to produce both scripted and unscripted genre shows. The first project on that list as it turns out will be based off of THE PURGE franchise.
THE PURGE TV series will be produced by Blumhouse along with Universal Cable Productions. The goal is for the show to air on both USA and Syfy.
Producer Jason Blum announced:
“We are excited that with the launch of this new studio, we are expanding our partnership with NBCUniversal by growing The Purge franchise into a television series and are grateful for their incredible support of Blumhouse overall."
This announcement was previously touched on last September when THE PURGE creator James DeMonaco stated:
“What might be interesting in a TV show is with a flashback narrative, if you start on Purge Night but you go back to show how people have gotten to where they are. Where you see a couple that's gone haywire on this night, but let's show everything that's led up to this moment of a husband trying to kill a wife -- the cheating or the accusations of cheating or money problems. It will be interesting to show those arcs, those dramatic and complex arcs that get people to where they pick up a gun or a knife and kill someone else."
Overseeing the series will be DeMonaco who has writers already at work on the show. Executive producing the project will be Platinum Dunes and Sebastien K. Lemecier, who is DeMarco’s producing partner.
As the TV series begins to take shape, keep in mind that another PURGE film is also in the making and is currently scheduled for release on July 4th 2018. While no details on the film have been given at this time, DeMarco did previously state that he is considering making it a prequel.
We will keep you updated on all things THE PURGE as they unfold.
