With last year being the election year, a third entry into THE PURGE franchise couldn't have arrived at a better time. Especially when the name of the film is THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR.
Each PURGE film has earned more money than the previous, so it makes total sense that writer/director James DeMonaco's franchise will be continuing in some form or fashion.
As THE PURGE TV series is now taking shape, we have learned THE PURGE 4 will be directed by Gerald McMurray rather than creator James DeMonaco who is very busy guiding the new series.
McMurray’s film BURNING SANDS made some noise at Sundance.
We learned not long ago that Blumhouse launched their own independent TV studio along with ITV Studios with the plan being to produce both scripted and unscripted genre shows. The first project on that list will be based off of THE PURGE franchise.
THE PURGE TV series will be produced by Blumhouse along with Universal Cable Productions. The goal is for the show to air on both USA and Syfy.
Producer Jason Blum spoke with Deadline about what we can expect from THE PURGE TV series saying:
“It will reveal to the fans what happens the other 364 days of the year and how that law affects people."
As the TV series starts to take shape, keep in mind that THE PURGE 4 is also in the making. While no details on the film have been given at this time, DeMarco did previously state that he is considering making it a prequel.
THE PURGE 4 is currently set for release on July 4, 2018.
