THE CONJURING 2 arrived into to theaters to mostly positive reviews. Fans were glad to see Ed and Lorraine Warren once again back in action. The James Wan directed film provided the fright as new entities including a ghostly nun took us to some frightful places. So much so that a spin-off movie was announced quite some time ago.
New Line Cinema has been preparing for the additional spin-off which will be titled THE NUN, and will focus on the Horrifying antagonist from THE CONJURING 2. Filming took place in Romania last year.
Corin Hardy is directing THE NUN, and he recently appeared on Adam Green and Joe Lynch’s podcast The Movie Crypt where they spoke about THE NUN.
Hardy had this to say:
“I can’t obviously talk too much about what happens. But it was really exciting, when I read the script, that it was something new. So, it’s part of this universe that’s been established, with a character that appeared in a movie, but it wasn’t like doing a sequel or a remake.”
The director then added:
“I’ve come from a love of practical. It’s not just nostalgic, it’s things being real and tangible, and you can light them in front of the camera if they’re there, you can touch them, people can see them, you can make them wet and they look great. All of that stuff you can do in CG but it takes such a lot of work to do it to the right level…I always want to say, ‘Let’s do everything as much as we possibly can for real, including in-camera stunts, effects, and then use the CGI to be beautiful, original, invisible tool.'
He finishes by saying:
“There’s a lot of pressure because of the incredible success of these movies. But then, you’re so focused on what you’re doing, you don’t really think about that. You’re just making a movie as good as possible. Maybe that will hit when it’s starting to come out, but really there’s just too much to do to be worried about that. You’re just wanting to make sure you’re hitting a level of quality, and originality, and making sure you love what you’re doing, and it goes down well. If you think about the pressure then it’s a little scary.”
The cast is made up of Demián Bichir, who will be playing a priest named Father Burke. His character will be dispatched by Rome to investigate the mysterious death of a nun in the film. Taissa Farmiga will be playing the dead nun named Sister Irene that Father Burke investigates. Jonas Bloquet as local villager named Frenchie, Charlotte Hope as the abbey’s Sister Victoria, Ingrid Bisu will play the role of Sister Oana and Bonnie Aarons, reprises her role as the Evil Nun from THE CONJURING 2.
“The story centers on a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania taking her own life, with a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together they uncover the order’s unholy secret and confront a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun from “The Conjuring 2.”
The screenplay for THE NUN has been written by James Wan and Gary Dauberman. Wan and Peter Safran will serve as producers.
THE NUN is now set to hit theaters on September 7th.
