So I Just Got Around To Watching "HATCHET"

...and I loved it. It ended up reminding me of the 80's forror flicks where there was more gore than anything else. Only this movie had it all! It had a great legend for the story to ride on, a half decent cast (Joel Moore has an outstanding performance as Ben), and one hell of a killer (played by none other than Kane Hodder) who wants nothing more than blood. There was comic relief to burn in this one... it had me bursting out with laughter, in between kills. Also, the cameos in this film were great... and are sure to be a delight to any good horror fans. And the ending fits in with the movie's style perfectly in my opinion. It wont scare you... but it will entertain you to death!!

For sure its a dope ass movie.

75% of the people I talk to hate it though and always bring up how I hyped it.

Fuck them this movie is AWESOME. The only thing that really hurt it imo was the fact that it had actors I've seen before.

Who wouldn't like that movie?!?!?!

It embraces everything great about slasher flicks, I've watched is several times now and like it more with every viewing.

I only got to see half of it but what I saw was awesome.

great movie and the one liners were damn funny.

but if you havent seen Behind the Mask the Rise of Leslie Vernon i HIGHLY recommend you do. the most original slasher movie ive seen in years!

depends on your definition of "better"

more gore? nope hatchet is better there but sometimes less is more

great story and a plot twist i never saw coming! (better than hatchet)

Great... I'll have to add it to my "to get" list. Thanks for the recommendation by the way! ;)

I liked it. It was kinda cheese ball at points but hey it was still good. I think they should take the comedy out of horror movies. They would be darker and scare you a lot more.

Yeah... but I don't think that this was ever intended to be a "real" horror movie. It was just meant to give people a good time... which it pulled off in my opinion.

Just got done watching it for the first time. I know I know, just been really busy. Thought it was a great film. Man they just don't make them like that anymore. It had an absurd storyline and over the top gore but that is what made 70's and 80's Slasher movies fun.

There wasn't any sophistication to this movie, it was very raw and very gritty and I really liked it. I thought it was a bit tedious in some areas such as the swap killings. They just didn't come fast enough for me, I wish the pacing was a bit faster in areas. I thought they did a pretty good job of making you fear this animal, Victor Crowley. He became somewhat believable.

I especially like the ending where she was reaching out her hand, (I thought for sure it was going to be the other guys torn limb) but it wasn't it was Victor. Pretty cool way to end it and I hear there will be a sequel. Hopefully still no budget and B grade acting. That is my two cents at least.

Exactly. If I had a good time with it... it's a good movie.

"I especially like the ending where she was reaching out her hand, (I thought for sure it was going to be the other guys torn limb) but it wasn't it was Victor."

Well, your assumption was correct. It was Victor holding Ben's severed arm. I thought it was just going to be Ben, dead, and slumped over the de of the boat. Good call though.
Myers31TKD Tuesday 1/22/2008 at 01:23 AM | 874
Watched it for the first time the other night. No idea how I managed to stick with it till the end, it was that bad. Worst film I've seen all year.
Sourfacedbastard Tuesday 11/25/2008 at 10:55 PM | 25530
Really?

I liked it.

Very campy, great effects and gore, and boobs!

It really was a return to the 80's "horror" that I enjoy.

I too enjoyed it for it's tribute to the 80s campy slasher flicks also.

It might not be the greatest film but I've seen MUCH worse.
DaShape Wednesday 11/26/2008 at 01:16 AM | 25563
I wasn't all that impressed with the movie either. It was a great tribute piece but to me if you were going to make a picture that is influenced by so many of the great slasher films that long ago they would have really tried to nail it and truly try to start a new franchise. It's not terrible (Mindwarp) by any means but I don't think I would care to watch it again....

I do however love the whole Victor Crowley character and the way he looked, Kane Hodder did a great job in the role, I just think the movie may have tried to hard to be a B slasher movie rather than just a good flick, does that make sense?
Horror Domain - Cursed Evil Overlord Wednesday 11/26/2008 at 02:11 AM | 25565
I thought it was a good movie, in fact I would like to see a sequel
krueger4653 Wednesday 11/26/2008 at 04:02 AM | 25569
^^^I agree....I liked the Crowley character and the story behind it alot! BUT.....I found it to be a HUGE let down especially after the whole "old school" horror campaign they had going. Was it campy? I guess but the films in the 70's and 80's weren't intending to be campy. They had the prerequite tits and ass and gore but the campyness is a result of zero budgets which amounts to: shit acting; shit f/x etc.

They were great for their time but nowadays look 'campy"....Hatchet came across like a comedy and the acting sucked; the f/x were too lly to be gross or horrifying; it just never got off the ground.

If you want a decent film with a true campy film seek out "The Evil" ("To Kako")....a zombie film from Greece.

wow, you are reading my mind Ghoul! I agree 100% it was a good movie but they tried to make it campy. Campy is something that happens and no one goes in trying to make something campy it just is either there or it isn't. This film seemed to try to capture that too much. I would have rather seen a film that was trying to be "scary" and if they had to pay homage to slasher films they should have did that by making a great horror film not by trying to act like a slasher film should act. And little to no CGI. Not a film that said before we make the script lets make sure to make something campy and old school. Again I am not sure I am making sense at this point! LOL!

But you get my point.....hopefully?

Are Ghoul and I alone here?
Horror Domain - Cursed Evil Overlord Wednesday 11/26/2008 at 07:03 AM | 25574
Going to see it TODAY! First of all, the name here of Hatchet is "Terror no Pântano", or "Horror on the Swamp"

Look what crap, this is the brazilian veron

This is american

How the hell could I with that??
LÜCKMANN Wednesday 11/26/2008 at 12:23 PM | 25594
Booman is right (I took an entire college class on Campy Film - don't ask

) "CAMP" is pretty much unintentional comedy or sometimes the oppote reaction that a filmmaker aims for.The KING film of camp is "PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE" but there many others.

You can't really intentionally make "CAMP"

. . . . Camp just happens

DaShape Wednesday 11/26/2008 at 05:29 PM | 25618
So are you saying the horrible acting in Hatchet was intentional?

I thought that was just from the bad actors.
Snoballz Wednesday 11/26/2008 at 05:59 PM | 25625
am I the only one here who actually liked this movie?
krueger4653 Wednesday 11/26/2008 at 09:18 PM | 25669
I think they were crappy actors to begin with but there was way too much of a "planned" feel to the flick. They should have just made a scary movie the old way as BooMan also implied. Im going to have to pop it in and give it a whirl again but if I had been in charge i would have gone for a grainy film stock but Im sure they shot in digital hdv but they still could have given the film that cellular kind of look (think TCM). i also would have gone with a soundtrack composed by analog keys/synths (maniac anyone?)

And they should have avoided the proclamations of resurrecting old school horror.

it almost played out like a shittier modern MADMAN only rather than the North East ol' Crowley was in the swamps.
ny ghoul Wednesday 11/26/2008 at 10:30 PM | 25693
Will your not alone the movie did very well I believe.

Ghoul again bro same wavelengths here! You are right on with my thoughts. While I don't fault them for this I really hated the whole swamp theme. That is just one gripe that really is just something that bothered me. It was probably good that they didn't do the same old neighborhood or forest setting but I just couldn't get into the swamp thing, no pun intended.

Horror Domain - Cursed Evil Overlord Thursday 11/27/2008 at 01:46 AM | 25713
i watched it and thought it was pretty good. it was a little cheesy at times but entertaining and at the end of the day that is what it is all about i suppose.

joelsparks Thursday 11/27/2008 at 02:20 AM | 25722
Victor Crowley I didn't mind. With better acting and less annoying characters I reckon it could've been good. But, it was the other characters that made it bad as they all annoyed the hell out of me. The bloke with the camera, the black bloke, the women that were getting their tits out every two minutes............all annoying!
Sourfacedbastard Thursday 11/27/2008 at 11:19 PM | 25839
another priceless Sourfacedbastard rant!

HATCHET is better than 90% of the commercial crap they put out these days.

It's not the best film but I'll take my chances on an indy horror flick any day.

This was well worth watching IMO., I didn't get intot he hype on this one as much so it was hard to be let down right off. Anytime I see a movie claim to be "old school" I just say yeah whatever and see how it goes. I haven't found much these days that can match the 80's style but this did certainly have it's points. I do see alot of the Madman idea like NY said. I enjoyed Kane's performance and the kills were certainly over the top but I have kind of come to expect that from Kane's movies. The acting may certainly not have been top notch but I honestly don't go looking for that in horror especially ones with this budget. I'd really like to see a second film made of this but hard telling as I am sure it will be on the list to be remade already by the idiots in hollywood.
