Writer and director, Jim Mickle crafts a perfectly expectable post apocalyptic horror film with vampires and zombies. Sounding cheesy on the surface, like most horror films do by word of mouth. This is not the case with this film. Along with writer, Nick Damici (Mulberry Street), the two write an excellent script with compelling characters and a kick-ass story line. A story very reminiscent of Oscar nominated film “The Road,” but way better in my opinion.
The film is shot beautifully and is perfectly framed in it’s camera movements and direction. Not nce last years film, “The American” have I seen such an amazing looking film. As well as he writes, Nick Damici stars in the film as the character of “Mister.” A loner of sorts that takes a young man under his wing after seeing his parents be attacked by vampires. The young boy is played by Connor Paolo, he plays the character of Martin, who is Mister’s “Helper.” The two hunt vampires and zombies together to find hope in this now hopeless world. Belle played by actress, Danielle Harris is a very well wrote and performed character to complement an already awesome twosome of characters. Once her character enters the fill it’s almost imposble to not fall in love with the characters themselves and you truly feel bad for their already terrible tuation.
The film feels clasc and completely original. Much like a Oscar nominated film in a lot of ways. The horror is awesome. A couple of great scares and tense moments driven by some raw dialogue that feels real and genuine through the tuations the characters are in. The effects are all practical and gruesome to even the most educated of horror fans. Just a hell of a film from beginning to end and the twist and turns this film takes will leave with an outstanding film that you will take with you as well as having you thinking afterwords should this film be nominated for an Oscar?
