Matt Cordell Is Turning In His Grave: PSYCHO COP (1989) Review

With any hugely to moderately successful film, rip-offs are destined to follow. With Jaws came Piranha, with Alien came Forbidden World, with The Exorcist came Beyond the Door, and so on and so forth. And while all are obviously inspired by the more successful film, each add their own spice to the mix to separate themselves enough to be very enjoyable. However, there comes a time when a movie is so obviously ripping a movie off, it becomes almost laughable how much it steals. Films like Offerings (Halloween), The Last Shark (Jaws), and Mahakaal (A Nightmare on Elm Street) forget what copyrights are and attempt to cash in on the success of their more successful originals. Such is the case for an unknown little slasher called...

Psycho Cop 1989 Review ?t=1327811420 Psycho Cop is not a very original slasher, seeing as it houses nearly every cliche in the book, but I still found it to be a great slice of late '80s cheesy slasher fun. The stupid characters, bad acting, and poor writing just add to the fun, and the great atmosphere and creepy killer are fantastic as well. The film has only been released on DVD in the UK, but finding a VHS online is easy and usually cheap. It's easy to understand how it hasn't gotten a DVD release, nce no one really paid much attention to it and it's too milar to Maniac Cop. But hey, if The Last Shark, which got sued by Universal for too many milarities to Jaws, got a DVD release, anything's posble. Yet, oddly enough, it's far superior sequel (read my review here) has gotten a DVD release (albeit a very cut DVD release), so what gives? Is it attempting to cash-in on Maniac Cop? Yes. Is it as good as Maniac Cop? Oh, dear God no! But is it entertaining? You betcha!

The Verdict: Psycho Cop is as paint-by-the-numbers as they come, but it's still a lot of fun, even if it drags in the beginning.

Score: 7/10. Definitely worth a purchase, but don't go out of your way to track it down.

I actually saw this movie on accident about 10 years ago. I mistook it for Maniac Cop. I was very disappointed when there was no Bruce Campbell lol. I remember it being a funny, crappy, little movie.

Entertaining but nowhere near as good as Maniac Cop.
