Ti West's THE INNKEEPERS - The Debate Rages On!

With debates being shown all across the country right now what better way to celebrate one of the very best "ghost story" movies than with am in-depth discuson. There is a reason that we here at HorrorBid seem to be pushing this latest installment of Ti West's foray into the world of horror and it isn't because we think he's a handsome guy. He is mply one of the very best storytellers we have in the genre right now, period, end of discuson.

With that being said and nce movies are subjective you may watch his recent film THE INNKEEPERS and absolutely hate it. Does that make you wrong? Does that debunk everything I said in the previous paragraph? No, we can all like different movies, that is what makes this community so much fun but don't hate THE INNKEEPERS because you didn't get it.

One thing that Brain Massey (Bnizzle) and I went into this film knowing was it would be a slow-burn Ti West type horror film and nothing more. What we got was mouthes opened and genuine scares. Was it because we viewed the film at 2:30am and there was a storm brewing on the horizon? Was it because we both viewed it alone and it just had that effect that some horror movies do, right place, right time? I am sure that a lot of our environment did play into really enjoying the film but hearing some of the reviews has also brought up some other great debates. The ending of the film and what exactly went down.



Now, I will warn you that I am going to get into heavy spoilers here because I believe this needs a bit of dissection so we can all fully understand what went on in this great film. Ti West delivers characters that we can all related to and then spends about 45 minutes building the tenon. This style is a bit more old school and many don't like it. That is fine, to each there own. But what people aren't understanding and something that Brian (Bnizzle) explained to me (a fact that I didn't really even comprehend) was that Claire (played by Sara Paxton) is the only person in the Yankee Pedlar Inn that see's a ghost. No one else does. When she goes into the basement she drops here inhaler and it is the fear of what she thinks she is seeing that kills her. When they show here bloodied at the end that was mply from falling down the steps. Madeleine O'Mally didn't even touch her, it was fear and fear alone.A great debate can be made that the place itself wasn't even haunted at all and that Claire was mply caught up in the moment. This is a film that almost needs a second watch to fully understand the psyche that Ti West has surrounded in this film and the characters that he has created. It has what every good film often has and that is an ending where you are left wondering if what you saw was real or not, thus it can be interpreted however you want it to be.

Again, I am floored on why this film didn't get a wide-release and it is a disservice to the horror genre that films like this are mply shelved only to be available to the home market. I truly believe if this film were to have gotten its time to shine at the cinema that we may have seen a film that could have matched numbers with INDIOUS. We will never be able to find out. Something like this is shelved while CREATURE (2011) got a wide-release. Doesn't make any sense.

It's highly likely that. It was all a result of her own fear.

Fear brought on the asthma attack, without the inhaler she couldn't breath.

Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate.. to suffering ... Agreed with all of you, definitely fear that killed Claire. What a great movie this is!
