Scanners III: The Takeover (1992) Directed By: Christian Duguay Starring: Liliana Komorowska, Valérie Valois, Steve Parrish Rated: R/Region A/1:78/1080p/Number of Discs 2 Available from Scream Factory

A young female scanner turns from a sweet young thing into a murderous, power-crazed villain after she takes an experimental drug developed by her father. Her brother, who is also a scanner, is the only one powerful enough to stop her.

Scanners 3 doesn’t seem to able to follow the lead of Scanners 2 as an alright action sci-fi film. As a matter of fact Scanners 3 pulls out some weird cards along the way mixing in some awkward comedy attempts that comes complete with one of the strangest dance sequences I’ve seen in recent memory. I think the best way to word it would be to just say that we have a bad movie on our hands that at times just doesn’t feel at all like a Scanners film. The first sequel wasn’t a David Cronenberg film, but still it felt like it was in the Scanners world. This movie never does hit that mark and it is hurt badly because of it.

Liliana Komorowska does do a great job in the role of Helena. She pretty much plays two different levels of the same character and does her part. Our male lead here falls prey to the pretty boy syndrome of the 90s that Scanners 2 avoided. Any 90s cheese you might recall for hurting films in that decade are all here dragging this one down and making it a chore to finish. The transfer, while still a bit on the softer de, does top Scanners 2 in the detail however. There is some grain that is present in spots that Scanners 2 didn’t have making it a bit of a “it is what it is” tuation. Not saying the movie looks bad by any means, but you can’t expect something like this to be perfect. The transfer is at least better than the movie.
