Favorite Horror Magazine?

Joel and I were talking about this earlier and we like to collect horror magazines. I have been a subscriber to many different horror rags over the years but I have finally settled down on one and that is HorrorHound magazine. It has everything I want to read about. We advertise the te in HorrorHound and have been with them nce day one. Fango has gone to hell and a hand basket in my opinion giving you reviews about B and independent horror movies. Not knocking that section of the market, I love indie films but often they report on things that just don't interest me. Rue Morgue isn't bad although I have only thumbed through a few of those. Scars magazine never really took off. I am sure there are some I am misng.

So whats your favorite horror mag that you like to read and why. Am I just a HorrorHound fanboy here, am I misng out on another great mag?

I tend to agree with you J that Horrorhound is great. I really liked Fango in the early days but I thought it really tapered off in the late 90s. I also love Rue Morgue but there's a bit of a personal bias there. It was started up in Toronto while I was going to U of T and I got on board when they were just starting out. At first it was little more than a pamphlet you could find at Suspect Video on Bloor Street just off campus.

RUE MORGUE has a more edgy quality to it than FANGO. I have to go with FANGO though for the precise reason that it supports B and indie horror. As an indie film maker coverage in a zine like FANGO means the world. We can't compete with the studios so FANGO gets the indie word out and its also a good way to get the studios ($$ ) to notice us. What I dont like about FANGO is a lot of the fence tting mainstream stuff like 8 pages on HELL BOY.

I knew you'd pick Fango Evan and I completely understand where your coming from. It does exactly what you said, promote B and Indie horror flicks which is a great thing, I agree. But I agree with Lee, it seems that the best of Fango was back when it was really the only thing around. I feel like they have tried to be Fango to hard in recent years, if that makes any sense. And the last issue I got of Fango was that exact issue your talking about with the 8 pages of HELL BOY 2.

Well I currently gets Horrorhound (actually I have to renew my subscription) and Scars and recently I bought a fango mag from the auctions cause it had an FX thing I was interested in. I also pick up Shriekfreak quarterly when it comes out. I'd say I like all of them but am more partial to Horrorhound and Shriekfreak. Both are great. Scars is okay but they're quality of mag went down I think. the 1st issue i ever recieved was by accident that zombies one i posted about being such a nice surprise. That issue was great and well worth the money you would pay for a subscription now they are more like those church bullentin booklets (paperwise, feeling, amt of pages, etc) I don't know if I'm explaining right lol.

You should try Shriekfreak Justin, you might like it. Only thing is it's in black and white for the most part but it's a nice ze...lol i dunno i like big magazines. it's like 84 pages...well one of them was. gives you lots to look through. that's what I was saying about Scars it feels alot skimpier now and days compared to what it was. I remember getting a letter from them-something to do with cost to make it i think.

HorrorHound is hands down my favorite for horror.

Occaonally I'll pick up an old Fango on eBay and those are fun to read, but the new ones aren't even worth it.

Fango mply cause it is all I can get around here and have never gotten to check out the others. I do agree Fango was so much better back in the 80's. I am still waiting to see the Horrorbid mag. lol

The HorrorBid mag is in the works but give us some time to create guys! I will say this, Fango is still one of those magazines that if your mentioned in it, it can be career changing so the effect of the brand is still there.

I think that is part of the problem with Fango is that they have let the reputation carry them way more then they should have but I do agree seeing your name in it certainly can make you.

i get fango each month and still love the magazine. they give me articles on the bigger movies but i like the hack and slash indie films they review. i will say this though i hate their online te, they are arrogant as shit!

I do remember Gorezone. I wish I still had a copy floating around.

As far as the price I agree as much as I love indie horror it still doesn't equal the price they ask for fango.

I went to order some back issues of Fango awhile back, only to learn that they're werehouse burned down. I still read Fango though. I just picked up the newest issue tonight. I also read HH. I have everyone of they're issues.

I had several issues of Gorezone back in the day, but threw them all out, as I did alot of the Fango mags.

I'm kicking myself now for doing so.

The warehouse burning sucked big time. It has driven prices ski high on alot of old copies. Unfortunate for me that the one I keep trying to buy every copy of was rare to begin with.
