Batman's new villains

"The Dark Knight" is still on the tip of everyone's tongue. But now, instead of folks breathlessly asking each other if they've seen it, talk has turned to speculation over Batman's next foe. Who's it gonna be?

iVillage is reporting that the Caped Crusader may take on the Riddler in "Batman 3." According to the rumor mill, Johnny Depp might gn on to play the nefarious super-criminal. But caveat emptor—this could be just as false as the one about Crispin Glover playing the Joker.

Slashfilm notes that there are additional posbilities floating around. For instance, Phillip Seymour Hoffman may play the Penguin or Angelina Jolie could don Catwoman's skin-tight suit. Truth or fiction, fanboys around the world must be having a heart attack at the mere posbility.

Still, the "official" rumor mill is just one of the ways superfans are checking in on the next Batman flick. Many seek the scoop themselves. We've noticed impresve searches on "batman 3 rumors," "dark knight sequel casting rumors," and "batman's next villain."

That last query is very telling. People clearly want to know the answer, but we doubt even the filmmakers have decided. To that end, may we offer the studio execs this humble piece of Search-informed advice: Go with Catwoman. She's far-and-away the most popular baddie and there are already a slew of searches on posble cast members including Jesca Biel, Amy Adams, and, wait for it, Maggie Gyllenhaal. Do fans think Rachel Dawes, Bruce Wayne's one-and-only, was really the Catwoman all along?

All the casting rumors have been debunked.

from the movieblog:

Ok, can we now put this whole “Depp and Riddler and Hoffman as Penguin” rumor to bed now? As many of you know there have been whispers that Phillip Seymore Hoffman and Johnny Depp would be joining the cast of the next Batman movie as the Penguin and Riddler respectively. The fire was fueled even more when Michael Caine said that a WB exec suggested the names.

I said from the beginning this was bullshit

Now it seems Mr. Hoffman himself is claiming there is nothing to these rumors at all. Our friends over at IESB give us this quote from a recent statement by Hoffman:“No one has talked to me about it ever — never,” replied Hoffman. “It happened, like, five years ago, too. It was a rumor back then and it’s still a rumor.

It’s just in the press. It’s funny.”

There, done, finished, complete. Let it go. It’s not true (at least not this year). The funniest thing about this, is that there are going to be some people out there who will still hold out to Depp being the Riddler because Hoffman didn’t say anything about him in his statement. Oh well… what can you do.

I’ve always said that I certainly don’t mind the idea of Depp as Riddler or Hoffman as Penguin at all… but let’s use some common sense. Christopher Nolan hasn’t even gned on for the next Batman film yet let alone wrote a ngle page of the script. No one knows who the bad guys will even be let alone who will play them. Let’s worry about casting issues and rumors next year.

I have to agree with this, nce Nolan has publicly stated he will make a couple smaller films before even thinking about the Next Batman sequel it's really hard to believe he'd be casting for that movie already.

Plus, nce the script and treatment haven't even been written yet . ..

it's just a long shot.

Plus I keep hearing rumors that Nolan was quoted saying that he won't use a "popular" batman villain in the next flick.

He said he wants to use a character that has yet made it to TV and film in the Batman Franchise.

This rules out The Riddler, Catwoman, The Penguin, ClayFace, The Mad Hatter, Mr. Freeze, Man Bat, Baine, Harley Quinn, Scarface, Killer Croc, Red Claw, Rhino and Poison Ivy.

I agree with you Joel. I hope they do not cast a quote un quote "big star" for this role. The further they stay away from the last Batman series idealls the better this franchise will remain.

yeah Ken, I just can't see them doing another Batman with the line-up I previously mentioned.

These new movies are trying to keep things as real as posble and many villains from the Batman universe are too "lly" or "comic".

The Riddler . . . who would probably be the next most obvious choice for villain just seems to much like the Joker.

Now don't get me wrong, I was a skeptic of Nolan ung the Joker character in a film again yet I was completely proved wrong.

Who knows, maybe if they completely reinvent one of those clasc villains they might have another grand slam . . . guess we'll have to wait until next year to find out.
