The First SCREAM That Started it All

http://img466.imageshack.us/img466/7817/sc157dn.

In honor of Scream week here at HorrorBid and the upcoming release of Scream 4, here is a little dedication to the movie that started it all.

Scream not only re-energized the horror genre but it established itself as an important part of the genres history and is viewed as a ground breaking movie that mentioned along with Halloween, F13 and ANOES. What makes Scream such a good movie is it's ability to be a serious movie as well as poke fun at itself as well as the genre which is probably the most integral part of the film's success.

The most memorable part from Scream is probably the opening act and it should be as it was a well thought out scene and it set the vibe for the rest of the film. The reason that this scene is so memorable is because of the way the action escalated from calm to crazy in a matter of minutes.

Scream not only benefits from a well written screenplay but also from good acting, with Neve Campbell playing the lead of dney Presscott, David Arquette as deputy Dewey and Courtney Cox as Gayle Weathers all putting in solid performances but the actor who I feel did the best with their role is Jaime Kennedy as Randy.

Another reason for it's success has to go to the creation of a new iconic villain in ghostface because who ever came up with the idea to use The Tormented Soul from Edvard Munch's The Scream to create ghostface is a pure genius!

So before going to check out Scream 4 this weekend, pop in a copy of the original and enjoy horror at it's best.

Oh no doubt Mike! Randy was such a cool character because of his knowledge of all of the other horror movies. I'll never forget when I saw the original film, the guy knew the slasher rules that we all joked about back then. He was a fan of the genre like all of us so when all hell started breaking loose it was hilarious to see a character that knew so much about the quote "rules" that he knew what to avoid. Clever character writing for sure and Jamie Kennedy did a great job in the role.

SCREAM was such a "smart" horror film and one that will be tough to ever recreate. Such a parody of the genre all while keeping the elements of a good horror movie that we all love. Also the soundtrack to SCREAM was terrific, I think that sometimes goes unnoticed.

I plan to watch the original, before I go watch the 4th film tonight at the Midnight Showing. I'm stoked and I am glad that someone mentioned the soundtrack because I think the muc was a huge part in the first film and that might have been what the other sequels were lacking in.

Lets hope that the new film gets it right!

I hate to say it guys but I just got back from the midnight showing and I gotta say it was a big dissapointment. The kills were kinda cool but thats about it. Felt like I was watching a sequel to the "Scary Movie" franchise instead of Scream at moments :S. Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson let me down, I even sported my Freddy Sweater in support. I will be sticking with the only dvd I own of the series, the original.
