Way back in July you will remember a little story we ran about two new verons of the Ghostface masks that were released by the mask company Fun World. These seemed a perfect fit for the fourth film which was in production at that time not only to add a bit of a fresh look but because of the Rob Zombie style "rotted" look of one of the masks that resembled that of his veron of Michael Myers. SCREAM 4 was rumored to poke fun at remakes and what better way then to take a jab at one of the most controveral horror remakes of all time. Add to that a Scarecrow mask and fans were "dying" to see what place these new additions would have in current day Woodsboro.
The masks were so talked about even Wes Craven tweeted a pictured of a stack of these masks (including a picture of his cat Cinnamon) which led to even more speculation. Figures were created and the community was in a buzz. After all, SCREAM 4 promised a "new decade, new rules" so why not alter the masks a bit here and there. It made perfect sense.

Well as we've learned nce SCREAM 4 premiered much of the film was re-shoot and cut up by the studio. Why you ask? We have no earthly ideas. The more information that leaks the more we want to see the movie that they originally intended to shoot. You can't go back in time without a DeLorean and a Flux-Capacitor but you can get to the bottom of things which is what webte SCREAM-TRILOGY.net did when they asked Fun World Director of Licenng/Product Development R.J. Torbert why the masks were mysteriously not used. Was it to throw us off the beaten path? Was it a clever ruse by the studio to keep us guesng? Unfortunately not.
Per Robert Tolbert this is what happened:
The Zombie Mask and Scarecrow Mask were filmed for the barn scene and they were edited out —-I was informed that Harvey and Bob Weinstein were concerned it would cause a bit of “confuon”.
Gee thanks so much guys. Wouldn't want to confuse your audience. Aren't we supposed to be the intelligent horror crowd in the first place? Isn't that what SCREAM is all about? Thanks for playing it really safe. And we mean REALLY, REALLY safe. Did the film add anything that the series didn't already have? Did we need a fourth installment if you weren't' going to "break the rules"? We could rant for days but in the end the audience spoke loud and clear and future SCREAM sequels are as likely as having Tom Hanks play a boat captain in PIRANHA 3DD.
Regardless we are left with some cool masks that would have been fun to see utilized. I guess fans will have to make their own movies. That gives us another contest idea. Hmmmmm.
