PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 has about as high of a mountain to climb as any other film in history. Mind that I said any film in history, not just horror. Why you ask? Because the original film, that debuted on a shoestring budget, went on to become the highest grosng film (again, not just in horror) of all time. The sequel the went on, again with a modest budget, to do extremely well at the box office.
On top of these hurdles the films themselves are all "POV" point of view films. There is only so much a filmmaker can do with this formula. So as we get into the third installment I personally thought that this may well be the proverbial nail in the PARANORMAL coffin.
Not so fast says Hollywood and film critics. During a special screening at Fantastic Fest, guests were treated to a viewing of PA3. Was it the failure that I expected? Surely more of the same cabinets opening and shutting would get old a third time around.
I was wrong, at least so far according to the tes below:
Variety: A slow-building, stealthily creepy supernatural thriller that takes a teangly indirect approach to generating suspense and escalating dread.
CraveOnline (8/10): It really is the biggest "Paranormal Activity."
Hitfix (8/10): It's more aggresve than the first two films.
Movies: If you liked the first two "Paranormal Activity" films, you will most certainly like "Paranormal Activity 3."
The Playlist (8/10): An effective, crowd-pleang horror film, and a seemingly inevitable box office champ.
/Film (7/10): It will make you jump out of your seat and grab the person next to you for an extended period of time.
