HorrorBid's Top 5 Halloween Myths Busted!

Someone cue up the lver Shamrock TV spot because it's only 2 more days till Halloween. . . Halloween. . . Halloween! Enough of the HALLOWEEN 3 flashbacks, now onto the actual holiday itself and the big questions that come with it! How many children are going to die this year because of Trick or Treating. God that sounds awfully blunt. Can we type that?

I guess we can type it but it doesn't seem right does it? Why should we even have to worry about kids on Halloween. One of, if not the greatest days of the year? Unfortunately because of myths and rumors each year less and less kids get a chance to experience the wonders of going house to house, ringing doorbells and asking for candy. Because of safety issues more communities than ever are having Halloween at high school gyms and convention halls. Is this really necessary? Are kids really being killed by the truck loads on Halloween or are these just myths? The quick answer is yes! Our over protective society is bacally taking the fun out of Halloween for no real reason, at least one that we can't seem to find.

Here are a few myths, really more legends than anything that supposedly happen year in and year out on All Hallows Eve.

HORRORBIDS TOP 5 HALLOWEEN MYTHS BUSTED

Psychopaths poisoning Halloween candy

This one is NOT true. At least, not in the way you think. There was a rumor of a guy in Minneapolis that would poison candy and hand it out to any little kid that shows up at his doorstep. Nope, no documented proof of that. But in 1974, Texan Ronald O’Bryan killed his own son and tried to make it look like he was given poisoned Halloween candy. He poisoned four Pixie Stix and gave one to his son and one to three other children – but not as the act of a random madman. He was just trying to make it appear random so he could blame this urban legend for his son’s untimely death. None of the other children ate their Pixie Stix, but Timothy O’Bryan did and was pronounced dead at 10 p.m. on October 31, 1974.

Crazy people put razorblades in apples and needles in Halloween candy

This one has some legs. But by know means should even be on your radar screen let alone a real threat each year. There have been specific, documented cases about kids being pricked by needles hidden inde of Halloween candy. More than 80 cases have been recorded nce 1959, but only 10 resulted in even a minor injury. The worst case was when one woman required a couple of stitches. In most cases, it’s usually because blings or friends were trying to freak each other out. In 2000, though, a man in Minneapolis (Minneapolis again I know, steer clear kids!) did put needles in Snickers bars and handed them out to kids he didn’t even know. One boy did get stuck, but not enough to require medical attention. The man responble was charged with intent to cause death, harm or illness.

People pong as the hanging victim at a haunted house have actually died

No that's not a real person hanging there. It's actually an amazing life ze prop from our friend at Vincent Van Dyke FX. So has people pong as hanging victims at a haunted house ever actually died? The whole night passed before they were discovered. Yep, that’s true. It’s happened on multiple occaons, actually, and suicides have been mistaken for Halloween pranks as well. One such occaon happened on October 26, 2005. A 42-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging herself from a tree on a busy road, but no one reported it for hours because they assumed it was just a Halloween decoration. Ok so we didn't bust this myth but it was to crazy of a story to pass up. Next time you'll think twice when you brush by that dummy hanging from the neighbors tree!

Child molesters come out in droves on Halloween

Halloween, it's dark, and children are out everywhere. What better time for a child molester to strike? Actually, just about any time would be better for attacking children than on Halloween. There may be more children out than usual, but there are also more parents. And while many states require sex offenders to post gns or leave their lights off on Halloween, there has never been a ngle case of a convicted sex offender molesting a trick-or-treating child. Plus look at the guy in our pic? If you see anyone that has that look on there face, turn the other way, please!

Satanic cult members will steal your black cat for ritual sacrifice

It's a good idea to bring your pets inde on Halloween, they are probably in more danger from rotten neighbor kids than Satan worshipers. It is widely believed that black cats were used in ritual sacrifices back in medieval times and anecdotal evidence suggests this might still happen from time to time. But despite the fact that many animal shelters are extra careful about feline adoptions around Halloween, there are no statistics to back up this annual fear of ritualized animal sacrifice. In reality, animals are abused year-round and the perpetrators are usually just your run-of-the-mill ckos. AND BECAUSE YOU KNOW YOU WANT IT!.....

My town started doing safe halloween around 99-2000, in the town square. At first people took little kids to it and some older kids went but alot of peopl still went around town the old fashioned way, by 2005 there was almost no-one on the street and almost no-one gives out candy anymore, anything you do get is mostly super mini or some nasty hard candy someone stole off a coworker's desk. Religious nutjobs have played a huge role in killing Halloween in my town, we get alot of baptists and jiehova's witnesses who think Halloween is the devil's birthday, some of them even hand out literature about how trick or treating and halloween are evil and satanic and you will go to hell if you don't repent now and pray in jesus name etc. Crap like that is why alot of kids don't want to go out anymore. I wish those people would just stay inde and leave the kids alone.

I have relgious nutjobs in my own family who swear Halloween is satanic yadda yadda yadda blah blah blah go frag yourself!!! And they swear by these damn myths. IDIOTS!!!

I live in a town with church goin council members who litterally ban certain movies from theatres. Or so Im told. Amazingly, we still have trick-r-treating, but its restricted to the "rich" neighborhoods. It's not like the days of my youth (I'm not that old) where you could wander the neighborhoods and find scary houses and tons of candy.

Anyway, Halloween is the best time of year. Unfortunatley, there are a lot of people who put too much stock in a lot of these more damaging myths.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

they just had a big thing on the news out here about how a lot of candy was poisoned in stockton and modesto (I believe it was those cities, could be wrong though) last year and concerns are high for it again this year.

Maybe just Californians are fucked up freaks because i went to school with a kid who got a razor blade in a homemade cookie (no apples lmao) when we were in like 4th-5th grade.

Matt, yes it was those cities and I happen to live in Modesto xD so yeah it is completely true. But then again what other city would have a poll where people vote for the local baseball team to be called the Nuts... Modesto is one effed up town with tons of ck crazy freaks. I can recall two years ago a kid receiving a candy bar with a bunch of staples in it. So depending on where you live this myth can be true.

I grew up going to a very conservative private school. I've seen every anti-Halloween video that promotes all of the aforementioned urban legends. Never been trick or treating myself due to my parents being so conservative themselves. Maybe thats why Halloween is now my favorite time of year! I do admit I believe in the black cat scenario. I keep my black kitty locked up tight every year, just to be safe. Great article!

I live in Bible Belt, Georgia so Halloween kinda sucks around here. Only me and my friends are obsessed with it. We have to go to a big city to find something to do on Halloween... *sniff* I miss living in Florida *sob*
