Behind the Mask with FGM's Bob Ferden

http://i43.tinypic.com/mb4hz6.

This is a treat for me because FGM does such amazing work. I have owned more than a few of Bob's hocks and they are all top notch really thick incredibly detailed hockey masks. His paint work is incredible and I have yet to receive a hock that didn't surpass my expectations. If your looking for an ultra high quality fiber glass hock then look no further than

Now onto the interview....

How did you get started in the buness of mask making?

I used to work at Checker auto parts as a sales associate and noticed we sold fiberglass and ren. I made a few crude hockey masks and they sold pretty well for me, I have been making and selling them ever nce.

Please describe in detail what led to your pason for the horror genre and or the Halloween holiday?

I remember making a home made Freddy glove out of pop cans and coat hangers when I was about 8 or 9. I still have it and that really was when I first realized I could make something unique that you couldn't buy in a store.

Who or whom was the biggest influence in your life and how did that effect who you are today?

I would say my Dad has been the biggest influence. He is proud of what I do and has always given me advice and support.

What do you do in your spare time when you are not making masks or doing something work related?

I play basketball and poker quite a bit and in the summer I will go golf ball hunting, camping, fishing, ect.. I just bought a house about a year ago and have spent a lot of time fixing that up as well.

What was your first sculpt and or mask making experience? Were you a natural or did it take time to hone your skills? How much have you learned nce then?

My first mask making experience was a fiberglass hockey mask. I wanted something better then the glow in the dark masks you buy at Wal Mart. It has been a learning experience with a lot of trial and error along the way, but I feel like I finally have the process perfected.

What project have you worked on in the past that you would conder your favorite thus far?

I can't really pick one or even a few. Pretty much everything I work on becomes my new favorite. In the past I have made Freddy gloves (made with copper not pop cans, lol), predator helmets, full ze Jason displays and costumes, Hannibal masks, and custom masks. Really my favorite would be a combination of all that and whatever I take on in the future. How has being a husband, father, or being in a relationship affected your work and are they supportive of what you do?

I am not married but I have a 7 year old son who lives with me. I would say being a father gives me additional drive to do the best I can. What projects have you accomplished in your career that you feel really cemented your legacy in the buness. Was there a point where you took a step back and said, "Wow, how am I going to get all these orders filled"?

Just seeing the progress I make each year and seeing my masks in peoples collections. Its also cool to see pictures of the actors who played Jason gning masks that were made by me. It gets pretty busy for me around Halloween but I have never gotten too far behind.

What were some low points in your career (if any) when you had to take time to reflect and ask yourself if this buness isn’t right for you?

I have always loved making masks and feel fortunate to have the opportunity. The low point has without question been dealing with eBay and New line cinemas/Warner brothers over the years.

What upcoming project can you share with us? Any surprises on the horizon?

Right now I have a new hockey mask sculpt that is in the final stages and I also plan to further update my webte with new custom masks and better and better Jason masks.
