I'll say Scream is a Slasher (or a tribute to slashers).

It ranks high on my list for originality and it birthed the teen horror sub-genre.

I'm not a huge fan of teen/horror flick but here and there you can find a good one . ..

Scream is the Best.(this isn't including parts 2 and 3)

I'll agree here. It was an homage Slasher flick, and was part of that "Dawson's Creek" horror era... so I guess the answer lies somehere in the middle.

My thoughts are definitely. Scream is that movie that all of us watched at same point in their life where your love of horror just rises to the surface. I went to see Scream Christmas day when it came out and it was purely by accident. I was in high school at the time and me and my buddy happened to pick Scream solely because we didn't know what else to see, LOL! He hadn't really ever heard of the movie at the time and I didn't even know it was a horror movie. Needless to say the opening scene with Berrymore sucked me in and I became a huge fan. It really is the match that lit the horror pason that I have today. I went and saw that movie all summer when it showed on our $1 theater. Sequels out of the picture, one of my top 5 horror movies of all time......ouch! Yeah I said it

The reason why it worked, or for me anyway, is the fact that it brought back all the 80's character's by paying homage to them. The first 10-12 minutes are the best I think. The rest of the movie was good to, however I just think the opening sequence brought back so many great horror memories.

Very much agreed and for someone that hadn't even seen a trailer at the time or even knowing it was a horror movie I just remember tting there with my mouth open. Everything I had ever known about horror the star never dies in the first 10 minutes. I would have bet anything on the fact that Berrymore would not get killed and then WHAM! We were just going nuts in the theater and from the creepy phone voice to the final kill, wow, still brings chills up spine.

I heard (don't know this for a fact) that it was Drew's idea for her to die in the first act.

She was suppose to be the main character but due to scheduling conflicts or whatever, she opted for a smaller role and altered the script.

So if it's true then give Ms. Berrymore some masve points!

It was certainly the right movie to come along at the right time. The genre had really gotten stale (at least I thought it had) and the time was right for something new. Craven started the self-referential horror thing with New Nightmare but it didn't catch on at the time. Scream carried that on and mixed it with some good horror and re-energized the genre and the fans. It was the first time nce Nightmare & Friday were in their heyday that I would go to see a horror movie in the theatre and it would be close to full. I can't say I particularly care for the teen horror subgenre that flowed from its success but at least it got people interested in making horror movies again.

I also really had no idea what to expect when I took a date to see it. Within 15 minutes I had been drawn into the movie and had totally forgotten she was there. That was the last date with her.

unfortunately it spawned some crappy sequels and a vast amount of crappy ripoffs

the first 15 minutes were freaking intense!!!!!!!
