Drake began his professional acting career in 1971, playing bit parts in movies and TV. He eventually played the role of a disabled office assistant Benny Stulwicz on L.A. LAW. He recurred on the series from 1987-94 and was Emmy nominated for the role on three occasions, 1988, 1989 and 1990 winning the first two times. He also reprised his role for the 2002 L.A. LAW feature film.

In 1981, the actor went the Horror route playing the mentally challenged Bubba Ritter in the made-for-TV movie DARK NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW.

In 1990, Drake took on the role of villainous Robert G. Durant in Sam Raimi's DARKMAN and also appeared in the first sequel.

Drake also portrayed one of the most memorable evil Santa's ever in the episode from TALES FROM THE CRYPT, "And All Through The House."
