THE BLOB is a very interesting franchise indeed. In the 1958 original, the evil came from outer space. The 1988 version shook things up a bit offering the threat of a biological weapon direction. Talk of a yet another remake has been going on for quite a while now with Rob Zombie possibly involved at one point. With Zombie now out of the picture, January revealed that EXPENDABLES 2 director Simon West would be helming this new project.
West, who is busy shooting his combat thriller STRATTON, recently spoke with Screen Relish and gave some details on this new Blob that we will be seeing saying:
"THE BLOB will be happening right after. In August or October and that takes a little more planning because we’ve got to design the creature. It’s going to be much more sci-fi than the original. It’s a bigger scale type of movie. It’s more ALIEN meets PREDATOR and designing the creature is a long and involved process cause its very sophisticated. It’s not going to be the goo pouring through windows. So, that’s taking a while to design and construct that.”
The director spoke more about THE BLOB remake in yet another interview with Den of Geek saying:
"It's definitely going to be on a much bigger canvas than the originals, which were much more small, niche genre horror movies. My version of The Blob's going to be more sci-fi."
He touches on the AVP aspect once again adding a little more this time:
"The blob itself will be more sophisticated, more along the lines of Alien and Predator and things like that - much more science-based, the way Jurassic Park made you believe you could bring back dinosaurs with a bit of DNA from a mosquito. This will be much more explained on where the blob comes from and how it works. It'll be a much more sophisticated creature - because it is a monster movie rather than a horror in that sense."
West on the Alien invasion part of it:
"This thing's come from another planet, and also, we don't know how many there are. It's fun at the moment - while I'm prepping this other film, The Blob is a bit longer term. I'm having a lot of designing this creature, what its talents are, its attributes, how you can think you've defeated it, but you haven't. It's fun inventing a creature like that - like the new Alien or the new Predator."
Producing are Brian Witten and Richard Saperstein with Korea's Taewon Entertainment and A-List Corporation co-financing. Jack H. Harris, who produced the 1958 film, will be executive producing with Laurence Freed, Judith Parker Harris, and Shara Kay.
We will continue to bring you more on THE BLOB remake as it unfolds.
