BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA is a 1986 sci-fi/action film that was directed by the legendary John Carpenter. The film stared Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall, Dennis Dun and James Hong. It told the story of Jack Burton, played by Russell, who helps his friend Wang Chi rescue Wang's green-eyed fiancee from bandits in San Francisco's Chinatown. They go into the mysterious underworld beneath Chinatown, where they face an ancient sorcerer named David Lo Pan.

Just around a year and a half ago we learned the news that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was in negotiations to star and produce a remake of BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA. Johnson also made the statement back then that he would like to involve John Carpenter in some capacity.

As writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (X-MEN: FIRST CLASS)have been penning the script for the past year, it appears that the plan to involve Carpenter isn't what it was originally planned to have been at this point.

Carpenter just recently spoke with Screen Rant, and when the topic of the BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA remake got brought up, well here is what was said:

"Screen Rant: We’re also hearing about a remake of Big Trouble in Little China, with The Rock…

John Carpenter: [laughs] I know! It might be crazy… it might be great! I don’t know. Nobody’s told me anything. No one tells me anything [laughs]

Screen Rant: That’s unfortunate to hear. The Rock had said, supposedly, that he was interested in having you involved in some way – but there’s been no outreach so far?

John Carpenter: No. No one’s talked to me about it. Haven’t heard a thing!

Screen Rant: That’s very interesting.

John Carpenter: Yeah – isn’t it great?"

So there you have it. There has been no outreach to the film's original creator at this point. Things could always change in the future.

Original synopsis:

"Jack Burton is a tough truck driver who doesn't believe in ghosts or magic. That is until he's swept headlong into a mind boggling adventure within the mysterious world under San Francisco's Chinatown. Jack's pal, Wang Chi, must rescue his fiancee, who has been kidnapped by the evil Lo Pan, a 2000 year old ghost who requires a green-eyed maiden to free him from an ancient curse and restore him to his physical body. Accompanied by a variety of would-be heroes, Jack and Wang venture deep into the catacombs beneath Chinatown to confront the wicked Lo Pan and retrieve Wang's girl. But before they do, they will encounter ghosts, evil spirits, monsters, Kung Fu masters, and of course the wrath of Lo Pan. Big Trouble in Little China - its the adventure of a lifetime, in just over an hour and a half!"
