Leigh Whannell has been all over the place this week. He was first announced to write and direct THE INVISIBLE MAN for Universal and Blumhouse. It is now being reported that he will be taking on the ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK remake for Fox.
THR says that Whannell landed a deal to where he will write the remake script for Fox, and while is not currently in the director's chair, they mention that the option is still on the table.
John Carpenter will executive producer, with Andre Rona and Alex Heineman as producers.
Over the years, this project has had many writers and directors including Robert Rodriguez. The remake is said to take a less of a summer blockbuster approach.
THR source:
"The remake will retain elements of the original but bring new ideas to the table. One of Whannell's goals is to avoid the bloated tentpole remake path that afflicted the reboots of other 1980s-era movies such as Robocop and Total Recall."
We will continue to keep you updated on the ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK remake as we hear it.
